PEOPLE PEOPLE ARTIST RESIDENCIES

PEOPLE PEOPLE ARTIST RESIDENCIES

join us for art, rest & play on 95 acres of beautiful farm land in the San Francisco East Bay.

WE ARE A GROUP OF ARTISTS HELPING EACH OTHER MAKE VULNERABLE, QUALITY WORK.

People People Media Foundation exists because Jared Callahan struggled as an artist. As Jared continued to persevere through rejection, he realized that there had to be a better way to build a sustainable career as a working creative. All artists have been fed the lie that if they continue to struggle at their craft alone (often leading to isolation, alcoholism, and crippling debt) then one day, when they’re “discovered”, it’ll all be worth it. This is not sustainable. This is not hospitable to artists from marginalized communities who aren’t given the same chances to thrive. This stance pits neighbors against each other, because if one person fails or quits, there is more space for others to climb the ladder of success.

However, we believe the true path forward is collaboration. Jared has a vision for artists supporting the work of their contemporaries. PPMF was founded to help tell the stories of humans who would have found themselves on the fringes of society based on their age, skin color, religion, sexuality, or financial status. We believe the future is artists from all mediums working congruously— being shaped by each other and their work.

what we do

& why we do it

We believe that artists need to exist within a variety of tension. Holding this tension is exhausting and often cannot be done well alone. We partner with artists to help hold the tensions of both rest and action, of dreaming up ideas and also executing through hard work, of solitude to find one's voice and honest community feedback to help refine it. We value both acceptance and transformation. Resistance and embrace.

In conjunction with Heirloom East Bay, we host a residential art program in the rolling hills just south of Oakland, CA. With stays ranging from 3 days to 3 months, we invite artists to come stay on our 95-acre art farm. Each artist sets a personal goal before being accepted into the program to establish the focus of the time. Some artists have chosen to enjoy a creative sabbatical, letting ideas percolate. Others have set clear goals for finishing their manuscript or music album. We believe that being in a beautiful place and interacting with the animals and land provide a valuable contrast our busy society and the often isolating world of an artist. One of the primary aspects of the retreat is the weekly art critique, where artists have a chance to share their work and receive feedback from the community. We have found that a change in location and daily rhythms can help artists grow into their next season of creativity.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: NICK GIANNETTO
